One of the things that make sudden infant death syndrome so frightening is a lack of answers. There has been years of research, yet, sudden infant death syndrome remains unpredictable. The most important step you can take to prevent crib death is to put your infant to sleep on his or her back even for short naps.

Stomach Sleeping: Although very popular, babies who are put to sleep on their stomachs have had a higher incidence of SIDS. Researchers have hypothesized that stomach sleeping puts pressure on a baby's jaw, and narrows the airway, hampering breathing.

Because, it has been contaminated with nitrates. Nitrates are associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in children, and pregnant women and families with infants should avoid drinking tap water when the nitrate levels are in excess of Federal EPA standards (b>10 parts per million.)

Some other causes of SIDS have been linked to bacterial and respiratory infections in the infants. Of course like many other infant diseases, use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco have also been said to be causes of SIDS. Because of sudden infant death syndrome, all parents are told to place the baby on his back until the baby is at the age where he or she can roll over front to back and back to front on their own.

Most people may not realize that SIDS is actually the leading cause of death for babies between the age of 1-12 months. Because no one knows what precipitates SIDS, it is the the cause of death given to babies who die for no apparent reason.

Do not place toys, covers and even blankets in baby's crib. Instead, if you need to provide the baby with some play toy, hang it on the crib where he can see it and be attracted to the toy by its movement or bright colors. Covers and blankets are not necessary during the infant's first year of life it the baby is dressed for appropriate warmth with suitable baby clothes. Too thick a clothing or unsuitable wear will lead to baby rashes and would irritate the baby and lead to undue crying.

Probably the most puzzling thing about SIDS is what it technically is, which is the sudden death of a child under the age of one that appears to have no apparent cause after an autopsy is performed and after looking at the past medical history of the child. This is probably the most frustrating thing about SIDS. There are so few answers and ultimately, families are left shattered, confused, and in almost all cases, devastated by this.

One study performed at Seattle Children's Hospital by Dr. Daniel Rubens linked hearing disabilities to SIDS. The doctor found that babies who heard better in their left ear, rather than the right ear as in most children, were more likely to suddenly and unexpectedly die. Although this could be helpful to determine if your baby is at a higher risk to die of SIDS, we still do not have any conclusive evidence of how the hearing problems directly causes death.

The baby typically does not seem to show any sign of suffering and death occurs rapidly. In addition, SIDS is commonly known as crib death because of a strong link with sleep. It is estimated that 2,500 babies in the United States die of unknown causes every year.
